20th Annual Concert of Colors Returns to U-M Detroit Center
In celebration of the 20th Annual Concert of Colors, the University of Michigan and Michigan State University will co-host the outdoor stage of music and culture on July 14-15 from 2-9 p.m. for the second year in a row.
Michigan State University, in its second year of collaboration with the U-M Detroit Center, adds a unique and entertaining dimension of performance and music to this popular festival.
The Outdoor Stage features 14 unique acts covering a multitude of music and performance genres. This year’s headliners include internationally renowned DJ and Producer, DJ Captn20 and Jazz Club sensation, Ben Sharkey.

The U-M Detroit Center/MSU Community Music School stage is located behind Orchestra Place, between Parsons and Martin Luther King Blvd. The event includes complimentary admission for all attendees.
The Concert of Colors was established by New Detroit and ACCESS in 1993 as a one-day event Chene Park on Detroit’s riverfront. By 1999, more than 10,000 people attended annually. The festival expanded to three days in 2001 and drew more than 100,000 people while celebrating Detroit’s 300th birthday.
In 2005, the festival’s opening night performance was relocated to Orchestra Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra became a permanent partner in 2006 as the entire festival relocated to the Max M. Fisher Music Center, with two indoor and one outdoor stage. In 2007, the festival grew to a four event.
In 2010, the Detroit Institute of Arts joined this collaborative effort, becoming the second venue for Concert of Colors. In 2011, the U-M and MSU Detroit Center’s began co-sponsoring an outdoor stage for the event.
