Work Detroit Presents: America!
Opening Friday, August 3, the 2012 exhibition season at Work Detroit continues with, America!
In recent years, America as a place, culture, and concept has increasingly become the material of artists. We see artists repurposing all things American —corporate brands and logos, music, fashion, flags, Presidents, taxidermied deer and bald eagles, American Indian motifs, and political advertisement references.
This show includes work from local and national makers that addresses America’s obsession with itself from varying perspectives and agendas.
The exhibit is curated by Joe Levickas, an Illinois native who currently resides in Ypsilanti. Levickas received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois and a Master’s of Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He currently works with Arts of Michigan implementing programs that encourage Michigan students to engage in the arts.
A reception for this unique and entertaining exhibition will take place on Friday, August 3 from 6 - 9 p.m. This event is open to the public and includes complimentary admission, refreshments and parking.
America! will run until Friday, August 24. After the opening, the exhibition may be accessed 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuesday – Saturday. Work Detroit is located at the University of Michigan Detroit Center at Orchestra Place, 3663 Woodward Avenue, Suite 150 in Midtown Detroit. Parking is available for exhibition guests in the structure behind Orchestra Place.
