The Semester in Detroit program continues its spring programing with the topic, Emergency Education in the D. This important and informative discussion panel will take place on Thursday, June 14 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at the University of Michigan Detroit Center. Admission, light refreshments and parking are complimentary to all attendees. 

This panel discussion will address the critical state of public school education in Detroit and where the city is to go from here. Moderated by Lolita Hernandez, author and Semester in Detroit and Residential College faculty, panelists include:

  • Dr. Jeffrey Mirel: David L. Angus Collegiate Chair in Education and Professor of History at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Author of The Rise and Fall of an Urban School System: Detroit, 1907-81 and Patriotic Pluralism: Americanization Education and European Immigrants 
  • Russ Bellant: Detroit Public Schools parent activist; Detroit Library Commission member, author of Robert Bobb and the Failure of Public Act 72 (2011)
