And the Legacy Continues...A Hip-Hop Display and Discussion Panel
On Thursday, March 29 from 3pm-5:30pm, the U-M Detroit Center will host, And the Legacy Continues..., a Black History 101 Mobile Museum Presentation. The event will take place in the Ann Arbor Room of the Detroit Center and includes complimentary admission, parking and light refreshments for all attendees.
And the Legacy Continues... features over 150 rare and original hip-hop artifacts from the archives of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum. The exhibit highlights over 30 years of Hip-Hop culture including rare albums, photographs, magazines, concert flyers, posters, lyric books and many other artifacts from Detroit to the Bronx. The exhibit focuses on the history of hip-hop in Detroit and gives a comprehensive look into a culture that has influenced the world.
The event includes a video presentation by Common Breath Media, which will look at the efforts being made to deliver positive media messages about Hip-Hop through music videos and documentaries.
The activities conclude with a special performance by 5 ELA and panel discussion with Steve Furay (Common Breath Media), Khalid El-Hakim (Black History 101 Museum), Thyme, Mudd and DJ Sicari (5 ELA).
Biographies:
Black History 101 Mobile Museum
Khalid El-Hakim has spent more than 20 years collecting historical documents, photos, publications and pieces of art related to the history of African-Americans in the United States. The Black History 101 Mobile Museum is a traveling history lesson filled with artifacts that serve as a valuable American history lesson. Khalid’s commitment to Detroit hip-hop is infinite, having already made history for his work with Iron Fist Records and legendary MC Proof.
5 ELA / 5e Gallery
Artists Thyme and Mudd have represented 5 Elementz from the beginning of their Hip-Hop Shop days. During thw 1990s, the duo recorded alongside Proof at J Dilla's basement studio. 5 ELA represents the 7 Mile funk legacy. Even though the Motown Corporation moved to Hollywood, the music never left. DJ Sicari is 5 ELA's DJ and rhyme partner, as well as one of the city's most celebrated hip-hop community leaders. DJ Sicari is the founder and business developer of the 5e Gallery; an art space and music space in the city of Detroit with a loyal and talented following.
Common Breath Media
Steve Furay is a journalist, media activist and founder of Common Breath Media. Common Breath Media is an international multimedia project for hip-hop and grassroots activism in Detroit and around the world. He also directs and edits 5 ELAvision, an online hip-hop documentary and web magazine. Furay also mixes for the Common Breath Podcast, which promotes independent musicians. A Detroit music industry veteran, Furay has remained in the city to develop the business and supporting of the 5e Gallery through creative media development.
